Sound of Animals CEO, Michael Chour, 48, along with his colleague followed the moped for over seven miles as it made its way to a slaughterhouse after spotting the dogs tightly packed into a cage on the back of the bike.

The group had been in the area looking for a local slaughterhouse after following the moped but arrived to see the terrible conditions of the premises where the cage of nine dogs had been dropped off to become part of the dog meat trade.

Many of the dogs are injured after being hit with poles as they are transferred into different cages as well as being dehydrated, starved and petrified.

Chour said: 'These nine dogs were crammed into a tiny crate that would have housed one dog in the UK.

'They had travelled like this for hours in the blazing sun. They were injured, dehydrated, and petrified.

'They were someones pets, not used to harsh treatment like this.

After arriving, Chour was shocked to see the terrible conditions that the dogs were kept in before being butchered

Chour said this slaughterhouse was one of the most 'barbaric, sadistic, heartless, evil' place he had ever seen.

'So these nine dogs would be kept in this small cage until the next day, when they would be slaughtered.

'I have been in hundreds of slaughterhouses over the last 15 years, and this one was the most, barbaric, sadistic, heartless, evil place I have seen.

'He already told me he had cut dogs' paws off that day for trying to escape, and does that on a regular basis.'

The dogs were believed to have been stolen from people's homes and were not used to such cruel treatment.

Captors would barbarically cut dogs' paws off for trying to escape, something that is practiced on a regular basis

Chour and his contact, who had given up working in the dog meat trade to help rescue abused dogs, were looking to locate a renowned slaughterhouse in the area when they spotted the dogs on the back of a moped.

He said: 'We were driving around the area looking for trucks, cars and bikes which were carrying dogs, in order to follow them to the slaughterhouse.

'We came across a stationary bike, with nine dogs squashed into a tiny cage on the back. I took some pictures, and hid and waited for the driver of the bike to come back.

'When we arrived at the slaughterhouse, I spoke to the driver of the motorbike.

'This slaughterhouse is so isolated, and so far into the jungle the dog thief spoke freely about what he had been doing, as there was no chance of him being found out.

'He explained that getting dogs in the area, was getting harder and harder, so it was easier for him to go to Siem Reap, another city in Cambodia to steal them.

'It is against the law in Cambodia to steal dogs.'

Originally from France, Chour said: 'He would not stop hitting this last dog, until she was dead.

'I couldn't take it anymore, I shouted out for the butcher to stop.

'The situation became very tense but I didn't care.

'I had to put my life in the balance, to stop this monstrosity of a butcher hitting her one more time.

'I told him to give me the dog, or I would not be able to control myself.'

Chour was able to rescue the pup, affectionately named Lewan, and took her to a local vets where she received treatment for a high fever and pain caused from the crammed conditions.

She will now be looked after at Chour's blue dream shelter in Thailand as well as four other dogs that were rescued that day.
