Decatur is one of three cities being considered for an expansion project by Milk-Bone, and its parent company, J.M. Smucker.
WKBW in Buffalo, N.Y. is reporting that the company is planning a major expansion of its pet food operation there.
Responding to demand for its Soft ’N Chewy products, the company is looking at an 897-square-foot addition to its existing 550,000-square-foot building. The added space would be used for a processing line and freezer expansion.
The company is seeking more than $1 million in tax exemptions to complete this project. Those tax breaks will be considered by the Erie County Industrial Development Agency on March 31.
Milk-Bone stated on documents that it is also looking at Topeka, Kansas and Decatur for the project.
The $52 million project would eventually lead to 17 new full-time jobs, with a salary range of $57,000 to $114,000.
The J.M. Smucker Co. has already made significant investments in Alabama. Last November, it opened its mammoth $1.1 billion manufacturing plant in McCalla dedicated to making its Uncrustables brand frozen sandwich treat.
Milk-Bone dog treats and Meow Mix cat food are made by the company in Decatur.
