The Kenya Metrological Department has forecast weekend rainfall in Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, and Kisumu, among other counties in the country.
In the five-day weather forecast covering the period from Saturday, February 1, to Wednesday, February 5, 2025, Kenya Met outlines expectations for showers in at least 36 counties over the weekend.
And despite the rainfall, temperatures will remain high in most parts of the country over the next five days.
The outlook for the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka, will have showers in the afternoon and night on Saturday.
According to The Met, the rainfall is also expected on Sunday afternoon. Mornings are expected to be cloudy, breaking into sunny intervals, while nights are expected to be partly cloudy in these areas.
Monday to Wednesday, on the other hand, will see sunny intervals in the morning and afternoon, with nights being partly cloudy.
Temperatures in Nairobi and the other regions on the Highlands East of the Rift Valley are expected to reach a high of 29°C on Saturday, and 28°C on Sunday with lows of 09°C and 08°C, respectively. From Monday, the temperatures will range between highs of 27°C and lows of 07°C.
Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and the broader Rift Valley region—these are the counties of Kisumu, Kisii, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Kakamega, and Busia, among others—will experience rains all day on Saturday and Sunday, with Monday expected to rain in the afternoon.
Tuesday is expected to be sunny, while Wednesday will witness sunny intervals in the morning and showers in the afternoon. Temperatures are forecast to hit a high of 31°C on Sunday with lows of 10°C over the five days.
Coastal counties like Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale are set to remain mostly dry during the day, with occasional night cloudiness. Residents should brace for high daytime temperatures exceeding 34°C, particularly in some coastal, south-eastern, and northern regions.
At the same time, nights are also expected to have high temperatures hitting 23°C.
In the south-eastern lowlands of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta counties, as well as inland parts of Tana River County, Kenya Met predicts showers in the afternoon and night on Saturday, with Sunday expected to rain in the morning.
Between Monday and Wednesday, this region is expected to be sunny during the day and partly cloudy at night. Temperatures are forecast to hit a high maximum temperature of 34°C with lows of 12°C over the five days.
Kenya Met Director General Dr. David Gikungu urged residents to remain vigilant, stating, “Strong easterly winds of up to 25 knots (12.5 m/s) are expected in the Northwestern and Northeastern parts of the country.”
