PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) - Nearly 40 cats were taken in by the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) this week after a motel was closed in Pueblo.

City officials made the decision to close the motel that reportedly didn’t have a lodging license for four months on Thursday. Click here for more on the operation by the City.

HSSPR is reporting 38 cats were kept in one room, the animals were brought to the shelter because they had nowhere else to go.

“Most of the cats have since been surrendered to the shelter, and we are currently evaluating the needs of all the animals involved,” HSPPR posted to social media. “However, we anticipate that many will require medical care, including parasite and dental treatment, spay and neuter surgeries, and anything else they need to heal.”

It isn’t clear if anyone will face charges for hoarding the cats, but now the shelter is asking for help.

“The resources required to care for such a massive influx of pets is incredibly draining,” HSPPR added in their post. “That’s why we are asking you to make an emergency gift today to help care for these 38 rescued cats and the other pets currently in our shelters.

This is an urgent request... This is an incredibly devastating situation for our Pueblo community, and we want everyone to know that HSPPR is always here for you in a time of need. We are thinking of everyone involved and displaced. We stand #PuebloStrong with our community.”
