Dog found in trash heap ready for adoption
An underweight dog who was found sleeping on trash bags a few miles from Maker's Mark Distillery is now available for adoption.
A St. Louis-area couple was approached by the stray dog on Jan. 14 as they were visiting the Bourbon Trail.
"We thought he may belong to a family on one of the nearby farms and has just escaped his fence," said Katharine Kulka, who was driving with her fiance, B.I. Middleton. "But we decided that if he was still there on our way back, we would stop and check on him."
The couple didn't initially see the dog after their tour but noticed a pile of trash after pulling over to allow another car to pass. That's when the couple discovered the dog curled up on a trash bag seeking warmth from the sun.
The dog had no collar and was very thin.
"He was very lethargic the first 20 or so minutes, but as he started to warm up, the heat seemed to invigorate him," said Kulka. "He sat up, looking out the windows and let B.I. pet him while I drove."
The couple brought the dog to the Kentucky Humane Society intake facility on Steedly Drive just before closing.
"We could feel every rib, and his hip bones protruded," KHS veterinarian Emily Bewley said after giving the dog a physical examination. "He had been without access to regular food for a while."
After a week of care at the shelter, Whiskey, a 1-year-old Shepherd mix, is now ready for adoption from KHS' East Campus on Lyndon Lane.
